Organizing and Storing Hand Lettering Materials
Hey there!
Do you want to get your artwork organized? Here is how I keep all my supplies and work under control. This post has a lot of pictures. Get ready!
Before I jump right in, I want to encourage you to create designated space for lettering. I’ve talked about all the benefits of choosing lettering as a hobby. If you set up an actual spot for it… the more likely you will make time to do it! Finding a place with natural light is even better. My desk is in our guest bedroom. Nothing fancy!
I recommend organizing your lettering materials in a way that works for you. Maybe you need everything put away or maybe you can have some things on display. Whatever your style or space, hopefully, you’ll find some inspiration today. I am breaking things down by category to keep it simple.
Brush Pens
I store my brush pens in a few different ways. I keep my most frequently used pens out on my desk. If you are looking for guidance on what pens to purchase. Check out this post!
The clear stackable containers make it easy for me to see what I have. The pen colors are just so pretty to look at!
Here is the list:
I also keep some supplies in mason jars on my desk.
Thick Lead Pencils (for sketching out ideas!)
Water Brush Pens (perfect for blending with water-based markers!)
All my extra pens I keep in a basic plastic pencil case in the closet next to my desk. I use these less frequently but still have them close, easy to grab quickly.
More Brush Pen Storage
I have shared this case a lot, but here is the last place I store my brush pens! It’s my favorite! The slots are very tight because it is technically for colored pencils, but after a little squeezing I could fit everything inside.
Here is what’s in my case:

Paper
Next, I want to quickly talk about the paper. Mine is kept in plastic drawers in the closet next to my desk. The top drawer has small cards. I make a lot of personalized thank you notes, birthday cards, etc. The second drawer stores my premium paper. Paper is so important to protect your brush pens. Read all about it here. The bottom drawer is for regular copy paper. I always need that handy for sketching and printing!
Lastly, I keep a few file folders to store my work in. The more I was lettering, I found myself trying to organize all the pieces I was creating!
I have labels of rough sketches, ideas to work on, and pieces I’ve posted on Instagram. Most of my work is inside of notebooks, but the loose pages are kept here. I recycle A LOT of paper, I go through it very quickly. Sometimes I spend all day creating and nothing comes from it! The reason for the files is to give myself some inspiration for the times I get stuck.
Keeping files of different styles and ideas helps tremendously. I have alphabets, days of the week, and months of the year. I love having my own personal library of inspiration!
I hope you enjoyed this storage post! Again, this is my personal storage preferences. There is no perfect way! How do you store things? Comment below!
