Benefits of Choosing Hand Lettering as a Hobby
“Why should I take the time to learn hand lettering?”
I’m so glad you asked! Today I’m sharing all the benefits of choosing hand lettering as a hobby. Hopefully, you’re reading this because you want to learn!
After having our first child, my husband and I looked at each other and said: “what about our hobbies?!” Life is all about balance. Personally, we didn’t feel well rounded and wanted to make a change. Our priority list WAS different, but finding time to do something we each enjoy has helped. Check out my list below to read all the benefits I have experienced since choosing hand lettering as a hobby!
1. It’s a creative outlet
Creating is somewhere deep inside all of us! Staying home from work after having kids has been wonderful, but it left me missing the creative part of my job. Now don’t get me wrong… I am thankful to spend time with my children and soak up a few short years before school starts. I love helping them learn and grow. It’s a joy! However, I have found this hobby to be very beneficial because it allows me to remember I’m not just a mom in her robe and pjs. I get to create meaningful, beautiful pieces for my family and friends. It allows me to “flex my creative muscles” (instead of just working with playdough and foam stickers) haha!
2. You can monetize it
The possibilities are endless! Here is a shortlist of ways you could make money with hand lettering:
- Create custom pieces for clients
- Open up an online shop
- Produce digital files (logos, worksheets, prints)
- Sell stuff in a craft fair
- Go to local businesses and offer your lettering services (such as window art)
I have to write another blog post on all the way you can make money from your hand lettering skills. Wedding invites, wood signs, chalk art, etc! The coolest part about all this is that you can CHOOSE what you WANT to do and make money! It’s a dream!
3. Hand lettering is very relaxing, maybe even therapeutic!
Hand lettering can be very relaxing. Have you ever run a juicy new brush pen down a silky smooth piece of paper? It’s magical. The ink hits the page and you are creating art. There is a reason why my top posts on Instagram are videos. Why? People LOVE watching them! Heck, I love creating them! The comments pour in saying: “This was fun to watch”, or “I feel so calm after seeing this!” Simply watching a hand lettering video can be relaxing. If you were to ask your favorite lettering artists why they started, you would probably hear some themes. They find hand lettering to be calming and enjoyable. Or they started hand lettering during a hard season in life, and it helped them get through it.
4. You can DIY your OWN stuff!
The possibilities are endless when you start hand lettering. You can create custom birthday and thank you cards for family and friends. You can letter prints to hang in your own home. Do you know someone getting married? You can help with the save the dates, invites, wedding signs, and more! Many people have favorite quotes. You could letter a piece for a family member or friend as a meaningful gift. The list goes on. No more shopping at Hobby Lobby and Target for the same signs everyone else has- create your own!
What benefits has hand-lettering given you? Comment below and share why you’ve chosen hand lettering as a hobby. Share this post with someone who you think would benefit from this amazing hobby as well.

One of my friends did some hand lettering, and it looked so fun and cute. So I asked her for some tips (and she told me “practice a lot”), and then just started playing around with it. After my sister gave me the Tombow beginner’s set for my birthday last year, I started looking things up online and found Dawn Nicole’s site… and from there it’s history. 😉 I fell in love with it. It is so relaxing and satisfying.
Projects that I do include quick cards for friends and quotes that I put on our refrigerator and change out every once in awhile. But mainly right now I’m just practicing. 😉

My husband hasn’t been traveling for work so it’s nice to have him home. Whatever your current circumstances, remember the sun will always come out. We will get through this hard season! Let’s be real good to one another. Remember to do your best, and not put pressure on yourself. Try something fun! Hand-lettering is a great hobby to pick-up.
