Fun Ways to Practice Hand Lettering
Let’s Have Fun…
The way to truly improve your hand lettering skill is to practice. Now don’t get me wrong, drills are very important. However, drawing those thin upstrokes and thick downstrokes isn’t the only way to get better. These are all useful and you will end up with some really beautiful work completely personalized by you! Yay! As a bonus, I created a freebie for you to download at the bottom of this post to help you work on your skills. Keep reading and happy practicing!
1. Bible Lettering and Church Notes
Filling your Bible with the scripture that speaks to you is such a wonderful way to practice your lettering. Bibles come in many different varieties. A lot of them now come with blank space for this purpose! Whether you are sitting in church or having your own devotional time, lettering in your Bible is such a wonderful way to practice. One of my goals is to fill some Bibles over the years that I will be able to pass down. I have my Grandmother’s Bible filled with her notes. It is such a treasure!
The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, Flowers- This Bible is just gorgeous! The 2in margin makes it easy to keep your personal reflections and create your own beautiful lettering.
The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, Single Column Journaling- This Bible is the one used in the picture above. It is easy to follow with extra-wide margins for you to create in.
The Holy Bible, English Standard Version, Interleaved Edition- I love this Bible because it gives you an entire blank page next to the text. Plenty of space for lettering verses, writing sermon notes, or prayers.
2. Card Making-
I love creating cards for family and friends to practice my lettering. A personal card is more meaningful than one from the store. Cards are small, making them a perfect place to work on some of your ideas. You won’t be spending too much time or wasting a lot of paper. I created this simple card for my husband on Valentine’s day! ❤️
This is another card I created it has more than 30,000 views on my Instagram and it was from a time when I was just testing out a new skill. It turned out great!
Watercolor Cards- These are perfect for creating a beautiful background with your water-based brush pens, and then lettering on top of!
Mixed Media Cards- you can use many different mediums when using these cards! Painting, embossing and much more!
3. Gift Wrapping-
This past Christmas, I lettered the names of my family members on each of their presents. It was such a fun project for me and I got a lot of practice in! You could do this any time of year whenever you give a gift (not just at Christmas). You only need a few things to make this project happen: Pencils and an eraser (to sketch your lettering first), brown paper, and oil-based markers.
Oil Based Sharpie Markers- these are perfect for lettering on brown paper. They are bold and won’t fade!
Oil Based Sharpie Markers Holiday- This is the pack I purchased for this specific project … Christmas presents!
Brown Paper- This thick paper can be used all year! My toddler loves helping me color on it as well.
Pencils and Eraser– I would suggest sketching your ideas first. It gives you a guide and helps save your oil-based pens!
4. Play Time Lettering-
This last one is a bit of a stretch but it’s for the mamas out there. It’s not a project… just practice. I spend a lot of time playing with my two daughters. I have snuck in some lettering practice while spending time doing on the floor of our playroom or outside when the weather is nice. Gotta get it the practice while you can, am I right?!
Crayola Sidewalk Chalk- such vibrant colors and just the perfect amount for one child, to last you all summer! (As long as you don’t get it wet 😂)
Crayola Sidewalk Chalk- This one is big enough for the whole family! I just love Crayola because they designed their chalk so it doesn’t roll away!
Magnetic Drawing board, 12.8in- we love this board! It is perfect for toddlers while they are at home. It’s a large board with stamps included for extra fun for doodling and mommy’s lettering. I love practicing flourishes on this!
Magnetic Drawing Board- 2 in one! This is the perfect pack. A larger board for playing at home and a smaller one for travel or to keep in the car.
What are some fun ways you have practiced your lettering? Comment below and let me know if you have tried any of the ideas I shared today. As promised, click the link below for your freebie. I also love snuggling up on the couch with my notebook and pencils or my iPad and Apple pencil for some fun practice. In whatever way you practice … remember to have fun!
