Tips for Achieving Hand-Lettering Goals
It’s the beginning of a new year… the perfect time for setting some goals for your hand-lettering!
Maybe you haven’t thought about it. I’ve found when you set goals or take the time to think about what you want to do- you can achieve more. Here is my quick list for this year:
- Learn Procreate five. This is the class I’m currently taking.
- Create more practice pages to sell in my Etsy
- Film more tutorials for IGTV. I have one video here.
- Learn to collaborate with more brands on Instagram.
Maybe you are just starting out. No fear! Check out some of my popular beginner posts here:

Below are some quick tips for achieving your goals in the new year:
- STAY CONSISTENT- Whatever you decide to do, make time for it each day or week. Whether that is sitting down and doing drills each night, or taking classes online to learn a new skill…make sure you stay consistent.
- WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS- Under each goal, list steps you need to take in order to accomplish it. Remember, success is a series of small steps. Throughout the year, cross off each step and then each goal. This will help you stay motivated.
- REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN- this is crucial. Hand-lettering should be fun! Yes, it takes time to get better… but it should feel more enjoyable than just plain work. When your creative outlet starts to drain instead of fill you, it’s time to re-evaluate.
- KNOW WHEN TO REST- taking a rest from your work is not only important, it’s essential for growth. I learned that resting and quitting are not the same. I took almost two months off this past year, and I was able to accomplish more than I ever have. Read about it here.
How to improve your hand-lettering skill this year:
- PURCHASE PRACTICE PAGES-In my own personal lettering, practicing with these types of pages has made all the difference. However, if you are unable to afford anything at this time, check out my freebies section and don’t forget to subscribe to my email list. I send freebies almost every month!
- CREATE AN INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT- (read my tips here) and get connected to others who are lettering! Instead of viewing them as your competition, view everyone as another friend. Think of the online lettering community as a bunch of cheerleaders, excited to meet you and help you along the way!
- JOIN A LETTERING CHALLENGE-I hosted two last year and both grew my skill, and gave me new friends!
- TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS- This is another way to focus on a goal, and accomplish something tangible, Again, if money is an issue then make sure you sign up for skillshare for two FREE months and start somewhere!
