Resting, Reading and a New Lettering Challenge
Hi Everyone!
I recently took the time to rest from my business and my hand-lettering. It turned out to be great! I wanted to share a little from our vacation, what I’ve been reading the past few months, and chat about our new lettering challenge!
When was the last time you took time to rest? I compiled a quick list of things you can do to rest and recharge. Even if you rest for an afternoon, something is better than nothing!
Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed by all the things that go into a creative business. Am I posting enough? Is the content what people need and want? Did I pin everything on Pinterest? How is my email list? Am I engaging with my followers? What are my goals? Am I even enjoying myself?!
The questions never stop. But one day, I saw this quote and knew it was just what I needed to do.
“If you get tired, learn to rest …not quit!”
- Turn off your phone for a day.
- Read a book for pleasure.
- Spend time in nature.
- Write a list of gratitude.
- Cook or bake something yummy.
- Have tea or coffee with a loved one.
- Take a bath.
Taking time to rest is something I need to work on. This past month was wonderful for me and I hope I continue to see the benefit of it as I head into the fall.
Vacation
Summertime was zooming by, so we planned a last-minute vacation to Florida. The time with our two girls was a blast. We had the best time recharging as a family. The sunrises from our deck were gorgeous each morning. I enjoyed a frozen blueberry lemonade at the beach every day while reading some great books. My daughter chased the wildlife around all day!
Reading
Fun-
I was able to read two books on our vacation! Woo hoo! Waiting for Tom Hanks was the perfect beach read. I would describe it as a fun (and clean) romantic comedy. This book just came out in June. I appreciated all the modern-day references (Netflix and chill, tinder 😂, and lots of movie references).
The storyline follows a girl who loves Tom Hanks (and the role he plays) in many different romantic comedies. She is waiting for a man like him, not just any random guy. She is also a writer; basing her own novel off of her two close friends. I flew through this book… I just had to know what happened next!
Spiritual-
This season I have also enjoyed working through a book called Pressing Pause. It’s a quick (and super relevant) devotional for moms. I try to do it each morning before I start the day with my girls. If you are looking for something quick and thought-provoking, I recommend this one for sure!
Each day there is a scripture, a related story and a call to action. The format is perfect for a little time in the word. I enjoy the questions at the end as well because these help me to reflect on what I’ve just read. They set up my day in such a positive way.
Educational-
The next book I’m currently reading is called How Not to Die by Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM. This one is more of a learning tool for me to help my family. I want to learn why what we eat really matters, and how to change what we are currently doing. I have been inspired!
The title may throw you off a little bit, but I am devouring everything in this book. Basically, Dr. Greger talks about our food and how we can use it to prevent and reverse disease. We could stop so many of our illnesses just by changing our diet. He recommends eating his daily dozen and focusing on a plant-based diet instead of the standard American diet which he calls ….sad. I’ve already started making some changes!
What’s Next … September
I am so excited to announce I am co-hosting another lettering challenge this September! This is the perfect thing to get me back on track with lettering and get those creative juices flowing again.
Will you join us?! The title is Brewitful Lettering. I’m a coffee in the morning and tea at night kinda girl. What about you? Find me on Instagram and let’s get lettering together! Talk to you soon!
