Beginner Lettering Series- What is Hand Lettering?

What exactly is hand-lettering?

I get this a lot “you have beautiful hand-writing!” and today I’m here to tell you hand-lettering and hand-writing are not the same!

When I first started,  I had no idea how much hand-lettering is truly a form of art.

Today I’m getting down to the basics and explaining some terminology. I’ll be answering the important question… “what exactly is hand-lettering??”

The definition:

Simply put, hand-lettering is creating hand-drawn letters onto something (either paper or an object). Using basic strokes, you draw to form letters and words.

Hand-lettering can be used interchangeably with creative lettering. It is truly an umbrella term because it covers a wide range of styles and mediums. Some of the most common types are: brush lettering, monoline lettering, and faux calligraphy.

Hand-lettering is not handwriting:

I want to clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about lettering. Hand-lettering is NOT handwriting. You are drawing each letter stroke by stroke, making it a form of art.

Think about it like this: each letter is its own illustration. Now, of course, it helps if you are comfortable with handwriting, but your lettering and writing are very different. You write one, and the other one you draw.

Imperfection is embraced:

One of my favorites elements of hand lettering is the imperfections! In hand-lettering, imperfection is part of the design. It’s essential!!! Each letter will be created in a composition planned by the artist behind it. They aren’t meant to look the same as a repeated pattern like a font.

Hand-lettering words allow the artist to put their creative touch behind the letters. You will even find hidden meaning in the illustrated letters that correlated with the message of the words- how neat!

The way a hand-lettered piece looks combined with the meaning of the words can be absolutely stunning and incredibly meaningful. This art form is truly an amazing way to express oneself!
